The Progress Presentation Session for the Suitability Study of Seawater Desalination Methods for Redang Island and Tioman Island took place on 11 September 2026. Conducted under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (13MP), this study is being implemented by the Coastal and Oceanography Research Centre (PKPO). The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Director-General, YBrs. Ir. Ts. Gs. Dr. Safari Hj. Mat Desa.
The research team comprises a combined panel of experts from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). The presentation began with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Effi Helmy Ariffin (UMT) covering the project on Redang Island, followed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ts. Muhammad Zahir Ramli (IIUM), who presented the study findings for Tioman Island. Key aspects discussed included determining the desalination plant locations, brine discharge areas, and local community survey results across both islands.
