The Coastal and Oceanography Research Centre (PKPO) of NAHRIM, in collaboration with the Marine Geology Unit, Technical Services Division (BPT), Department of Minerals and Geoscience Malaysia (JMG), conducted a Sediment Transport and Beach Profile Study at Pulau Sibu and Pulau Pemanggil, Johor, from 10 to 16 September 2026.
This study was conducted to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of coastal dynamics and coastal geohazard processes, particularly in areas exposed to wave actions from the open sea. The study focused on the processes of erosion, sediment transport and deposition, as well as morphological changes along the coastal areas of both islands.
The team, led by Dr. Amri Md Shah, conducted field data collection activities involving bathymetric observations (up to a depth of -20 m MSL), topographic measurements (up to 100 m inland from the waterline), data collection through six transect lines for each island, seabed sediment grab sampling, and the development of a GIS database for beach profiles. The data collected from the seabed to the inland areas will serve as an important basis for understanding the relationship between geological characteristics, wave and current dynamics, and coastal morphological changes at Pulau Sibu and Pulau Pemanggil.
In addition to fieldwork, the PKPO team was also involved in the development of 2D Hydrodynamic (HD) and Spectral Wave (SW) numerical modelling to assist in producing spatial maps of sediment distribution and movement, as well as assessing the morphological changes of the islands as a baseline for future coastal monitoring.
The implementation of this study reflects NAHRIM’s commitment to strengthening field data-based research and modelling technology, particularly in the fields of coastal dynamics, geohazards and sustainable coastal area management.
The strategic collaboration between NAHRIM and JMG also continues to strengthen technical expertise and support the development of national knowledge and capacity in addressing challenges related to coastal morphological changes and coastal geohazards.
