NAHRIM, through the Coastal and Oceanography Research Centre, attended the Pre-Steering Committee Meeting (JKP) for the Malaysia Blue Economy Blueprint (MBEB) Study No. 1/2026 held virtually. The meeting served as a multi-stakeholder platform to discuss the latest progress across the country’s seven key Blue Economy sectors, including fisheries, maritime tourism, renewable energy, marine biotechnology, and desalination—where NAHRIM serves as the lead implementing agency for the desalination initiative.
A primary focus of the discussion was the desalination sector, highlighting Malaysia’s current 10th-place global ranking in research within this field. To ensure Malaysia can provide a safe, sufficient, and sustainable water supply for the nation by 2035, three key strategies have been outlined:
- Establishing a national roadmap
- Implementing pilot projects in selected areas
- Developing local expertise and industry players
