12 January 2026 | The National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM), through the Coastal and Oceanography Research Centre (PKPO), conducted a technical visit led by Ts. Saiful Bahri bin Hamzah, together with five NAHRIM officers, to the Pulau Besar Water Treatment Plant, managed by Syarikat Air Melaka Berhad (SAMB). Also present were two officers from SAMB.
The primary objective of the visit was to provide exposure to NAHRIM officers on water treatment processes utilising Ultrafiltration (UF) and Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technologies. Both treatment plants were constructed within an area of 200 square metres to treat seawater for use by the island’s residents. NAHRIM officers received detailed briefings from SAMB on each stage of the treatment process and had the opportunity to raise direct questions regarding the treatment operations with the product supplier, UNW M&E Sdn Bhd, as well as SAMB.
Through this visit, the Coastal and Oceanography Research Centre (PKPO) had the opportunity to explore potential Research and Development (R&D) in desalination technology under the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (RMK-13).
