NAHRIM’S PKPO focused marine observation mission in Labuan waters has successfully entered the instrument and data recovery phase. The dedication of our field officers in gathering high-resolution wave and current data, a critical component of the nation’s long-term marine monitoring strategy.
This operation involved:
Continuous Long-term Observation: The deployment of high-tech Acoustic Wave and Current (AWAC) instruments continuously for seven months (October 2025 – May 2026). On-site photos showing the AWAC dome heavily covered in biofouling during retrieval visually confirm the long duration of continuous observation recorded, contrasting sharply with its condition just before the observation began.
Comprehensive Field Team Support: The recovery was meticulously executed with strong support from PKPO field officers and collaboration with professional divers to verify instrument integrity before lifting.
This strategic data provides critical input to meet the needs of the defense sector and to support the development of modern navigation standards—specifically the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) S-100 / S-111. It also serves as core input for sea level rise studies, coastal engineering, and the Malaysia Marine Digital Twin.
Entering its eighth consecutive year (2018–2026), this continued observation proves NAHRIM’s technical capability and integrity in providing authentic data for the country’s strategic interests, the well-being of coastal communities, and the sustainability of the maritime economy.
