The National Water Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM) successfully hosted a technical visit and strategic meeting with a delegation from Japan. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia alongside experts from the University of Tsukuba, Malaysia (UTMy) and the University of Tsukuba also present are the representative from Japan Embassy, led by Prof. Dr. Maki Tsujimura. The NAHRIM delegation was led by YBrs. Ir. Ts. Gs. Dr. Safari bin Hj. Mat Desa (Deputy Director General Covering the duties of Director General of NAHRIM), accompanied by directors of research centres and laboratories.
The discussion focused on following up on Sabo-related initiatives (sediment disaster prevention) in Malaysia. It included a research presentation by Prof. Dr. Taro Uchida—a leading Sabo expert who previously served as a speaker for NAHRIM’s webinar in 2022. This session provided a platform to exchange views on new cooperation opportunities that could serve as concrete project candidates under the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed between the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) and Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).
Overall, this technical visit and meeting significantly strengthened bilateral synergy in water science, sediment disaster risk management, and cross-border research. This proactive engagement is expected to further fortify the strategic partnership between Malaysia and Japan in technology transfer and sustainable infrastructure development.
