26 JANUARY 2026 | TACKLING MICROPLASTIC THREATS: NAHRIM STRENGTHENS STRATEGIC COLLABORATION WITH MOH

On 26 January 2026, the Water Quality Laboratory (MKA) of NAHRIM presented the findings of the “Needs and Feasibility Study for Microplastic Research in Selected River Basins.”

This study represents a proactive step in monitoring emerging pollutants to ensure the long-term sustainability of the nation’s water resources.

Study Focus Locations:

• Muda River Basin & Perak River Basin.
• Four (4) selected Water Treatment Plants (WTP) in Kedah and Perak.

This session was attended by:

• Ms. Bariah Bakri, Senior Deputy Director, Engineering Services Division (BPK), Ministry of Health (MOH).
• Dr. Rohaida Ismail, Head of Environmental Health Research Centre, National Institutes of Health (NIH).
• Senior Officers from the Public Health Engineering Sector (BPK, MOH) & State Health Officers (Perak, Kedah, and Negeri Sembilan).
• Research team from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT).
• NAHRIM MKA Research Team led by project coordinator, ChM. Nor Salmi Abdullah.

Through this collaboration, NAHRIM is committed to empowering technical data sharing and strengthening its role as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) Centre for microplastic research in Malaysia.
