Plastic pollution encompasses a wide range of size categories, from large plastic debris to micro- and nanoscale particles. Microplastics (MPs) can originate from various sources and plastic degradation processes in the environment, including domestic activities, personal care products, plastic waste, polystyrene products, and tyre wear. These sources can generate various forms of microplastics, such as microfibres, microbeads, microfragments, microfilms, microfoams, and micro-rubber/debris, which have the potential to disperse throughout aquatic environments.
