Did you know that the Perak River is more than just an ordinary river?
Originating from the pristine forests of Royal Belum—an ancient rainforest rich in biodiversity—the Perak River flows through numerous significant areas that have preserved history, culture, and the livelihoods of communities for thousands of years.
Along its basin lies the Lenggong Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for the discovery of prehistoric human remains known as the Perak Man. This remarkable finding proves that the area was among the earliest human settlements in the region.
The Perak River also bears witness to the history of the Perak Sultanate. At Beting Beras Basah, Sultan Muzaffar Shah was proclaimed the first Sultan of Perak, while Kuala Kangsar later developed into a Royal Town rich in heritage, featuring landmarks such as Istana Kenangan, Ubudiah Mosque, and the traditional pottery craft of Labu Sayong.
Beyond its historical significance, the Perak River continues to contribute to economic development through water resources, hydroelectric power generation, and tourism-related activities.
However, the river also faces challenges, including flood risks and the impacts of development. Therefore, awareness and cooperation from all stakeholders are essential to ensure that this river continues to be preserved as a natural treasure for future generations.
