10 MARCH 2026 | OCEAN ACIDIFICATION: THE HIDDEN THREAT BENEATH THE BLUE

Ocean acidification is a silent crisis that occurs when seawater becomes more acidic (pH levels drop) due to the excessive absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. As global temperatures rise, warmer oceans accelerate chemical reactions that convert CO2 into carbonic acid, disrupting the delicate balance of our marine ecosystems.

This phenomenon poses a severe threat to biodiversity, fisheries, tourism, and national food security. The impacts are alarming; it hinders the formation of coral skeletons and thins the protective shells of marine life such as shrimp, crabs, clams, and oysters. Weakened coral structures and damaged habitats ultimately jeopardize the economy and the livelihoods of our communities.

We all hold the responsibility to act now. Let us work together to protect our coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions through daily sustainable habits like carpooling, and prevent chemical waste from entering our waters. Let’s safeguard our marine treasures today to secure a better future for generations to come.
