The 14th Microbiology Workshop: Biochemical & Molecular Identification of Bacteria and Fungi was held from 12 to 14 August 2026 at Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM).
The workshop served as a platform to strengthen knowledge and practical skills in microbiology, particularly in the identification of bacteria and fungi through biochemical and molecular approaches. Dr. Azlinda binti Ibrahim from Water Quality Laboratory (MKA), NAHRIM, had the opportunity to participate in theoretical and practical sessions covering microscopic observation, biochemical analysis, genomic DNA extraction, PCR targeting the 16S rRNA and ITS genes, gel electrophoresis, as well as bioinformatics analyses such as BLAST, primer design, phylogenetic analysis, and NCBI submission.
Participation in this workshop also provided an opportunity to strengthen technical competency and enhance capabilities in the application of molecular and bioinformatics techniques to support microbiological research and analysis at MKA. This is in line with NAHRIM’s commitment to strengthening expertise and analytical excellence in support of research and national water quality monitoring.
