CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The intelligent river guard system (INTRiGUARD), which helps authorities stop encroachment and get early indication for floods, will be expanded to other rivers in Pahang after the pioneer project in Cameron Highlands was officially launched today.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the next area would be Janda Baik, where rivers had also recorded quality deterioration.

The success of the project, he said, would encourage the installation of INTRiGUARD in other districts and lead to further expansion nationwide.

Developed by National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (Nahrim), Adnan said the project was part of an integrated approach to help improve the quality of water in Sungai Bertam and its tributaries.

A total of 3,000 poles with sensors are expected to be installed along the rivers in two years under the RM8 million project.

In the first six months of this year, he said 300 of the intelligent poles will be installed along Sungai Bertam and its tributaries.

“The water quality of Sungai Bertam and its tributaries has improved after Nahrim introduced various initiatives under its integrated drainage system,” he said after launching the project at Tanah Rata.
