New committee to monitor river sand mining activities

PUTRAJAYA: A special committee will be established to further strengthen the monitoring and enforcement mechanism for river sand mining activities, especially in the Flood Mitigation Programme (RTB).

It was decided during the National Water Resources Meeting, was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today.

The decision was made because the federal government had spent a large amount of allocation to restore the damaged rivers due to sand mining activities.

The current monitoring and enforcement mechanism on sand mining activities is not as effective and it will eventually bring a negative effect on rivers.

Also present during the meeting were Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas and Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui.

Meanwhile, state governments have also taken note of the status and problems of eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs that were listed in the research conduced by the National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia (NAHRIM).

The Strategic Plan in Sustainable Management of Lakes and Reservoirs proposal was also presented in the meeting and it was derived from the study conducted by NAHRIM on a selection of 90 lakes and reservoirs in Malaysia that has eutrophication problems.

Eutrophication is a form of lake, river or pond pollution from sources such as sewage, animal waste or fertiliser which promotes rapid algae growth.

As the algae die and decompose, high levels of organic matter and the decomposing organisms deplete the water of available oxygen, causing the death of other organisms, such as fish.

"Feedback on the usage of the Sustainable Management of Lakes and Reservoirs Strategic Plan proposed by NAHRIM will be submitted to the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry soon," the statement said.

The strategic plan was proposed to be implemented at the national and state levels and it is aimed at ensuring an implementation of integrated lake management by various parties.

"This will ensure that the water quality in lakes and reservoirs can be maintained as it can be one of the alternative sources for water that can be exploited in the future as the demand for water in our country will continue to rise especially in cities," the statement said.
