On 28^th March 2011, NAHRIM has organized a workshop entitled "Sea Level Rise Due To Climate Change Impacts” at NAHRIM’s Mini Auditorium. This one-day workshop was attended by more than 54 participants, consisting of officials from government departments, private consultants, NGO representatives, professors, lecturers and students from the Institute of Higher Learning.

      The workshop began with some remarks from the Director of Coastal Research Center, Ir. Mohd. Radzi bin Abd. Hamid. The opening speech for the workshop was read by the Director of Hydraulic and Instrumentation Laboratory, Ir. Hj. Mohd. Fauzi bin Mohamad on behalf of NAHRIM’s Director General who was attending an oversea conference. The first session of the workshop began with a paper entitled The Study of the Impact of Climate Change on Sea Level Rise at Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, which was presented by Prof. M. L. Kavvas, Director of California Hydrological Research Laboratory (CHRL). Upon completion, a photo session was held for the participants and speakers at the NAHRIM’s Hydraulics and Instrumentation Laboratory.

      The second session continued with two papers, with the titles of NAHRIM's Research Related to Sea Level Rise, presented by Ir. Mohd Radzi bin Abd Hamid; and Potential Impacts of Predicted Sea Level Rise on Coastal Flooding At Tg.Piai, Johore by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Khairi bin Abd. Wahab, Director of Institute for Coastal and Offshore Engineering (COEI), UTM. This session was chaired by Dr Hj. Saim bin Suratman, Director of Geo-hydrology Research Center. The workshop continues with a Breakout Session at which participants and speakers were divided into three groups and each group had to discussed on the given topics, namely: Modeling Approach, Structure / Environmental / supported by carbon trading / Agriculture in Percentage Damage and Marine Policy.

      The last session of the workshop were carried out with presentations by representatives from each group and then followed by summary and closing session, presented by Ir. Hj. Mohd Fauzi bin Mohamad who discussed and analyzed the potential impacts of climate change on sea level rise in Malaysia. He also highlighted the need to formulate and prepare response strategies in adaptation and mitigation especially in the private sector to face the challenges of the impact of sea level rise in the future.
