on . Posted in Archives of Activities 2014

The Seminar on NAHRIM Technical Guide No. 2: The Design Guide for Rainwater Harvesting Systems was organised by Water Resources and Climate Change Research Centre at NAHRIM Mini Auditorium. The seminar was officiated by Director General of NAHRIM, YBhg. Datuk Ir. Hj. Ahmad Jamalluddin bin Shaaban and attended by 110 participants from various government departments and agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), engineering consultants and universities.

This seminar highlighted the findings and development of the Design Guide for Rainwater Harvesting Systems by NAHRIM, especially for private residences and buildings. In addition, this seminar was a platform for technical discussions, feedbacks and opinions from seminar attendees on the planning, development and enforcement of rainwater harvesting systems and the fine-tuning of the Design Guide.

The technical presentation session started with “Overview of Rainwater Harvesting Systems in Malaysia” by Tuan Hj Jabir Kardi followed by “NAHRIM Technical Guide No 2: The Design Guide for Rainwater Harvesting Systems” by Dr Huang Yuk Feng. The Q&A Session was held subsequently from 11.30am to 1.00pm. The session was chaired by Ir Mohd Zaki Mat Amin, Director of Water Resources and Climate Change Research Centre. Ir. Ellias Saidin (ENSEARCH) and Ir. Hooi Yoke Meng, former Kuala Lumpur City Council drainage and irrigation director, were invited as panellists for the session together with Tuan Hj Jabir Kardi and Dr Huang Yuk Feng.

Among the issues raised in the seminar were the suitability of the design and sizing of the first flush system, downpipe, and leaf guard with wire mesh for protection against mosquitoes. Apart from that, rainwater harvesting system design depends on the usage of the collected rainwater, type of building, and location; the difference between the utilisation of rainwater for storm water management or harvesting purposes was also discussed.

The seminar ended at 1.15pm with a short summary by Ir Mohd Zaki as the chairman of the seminar and was followed by a photography session and lunch.
