BOTANICAL LAKE GARDEN WATER QUALITY REHABILITATION PROJECT

Lake Garden was renamed Botanical Lake Garden by Honourable Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak on the 28 June 2011. The purpose of this programme was to turn the 122-year-old lake garden into a world class botanical garden. The lake located on the left side of Jalan Sultan Salahuddin, leading towards the Malaysian Parliament’s building.

 

The lake was an ex-tin mine during the British colonial period. During that period, the miners used mine trough, or locally called as lombong palung. After the amount of tin was decreasing, the mine was left abandoned and was developed as a recreational place. Now, the place has been well-managed with various species of ornamental plants.

The water in the lake is fairly static. However, there are a few overflow drainages leading the flow directly into a huge drainage. Eutrophication is the main problem as it consists of excessive nutrients and organic matters in the water body, which contributes to main factors of algal bloom. The water body turned to greenish colour due to huge amount of chlorophyll-a pigments in the algae.

T he exercise of this project has successfully increased the Water Quality Index (WQI-DOE) in the lake from Class III-IV to Class II by applying bio-friendly treatment method that consist of Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), Climbing perch (Anabas testudineus), Big head carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) bio-flocculants as well as effective microorganism. Turbidity curtain was used to control the surface runoff from directly entering the lake whereas bubble aerator help increase the rate of dissolved oxygen in the water body. The water under category Class II is suitable for sport and recreational activities. Besides, clorophyll-a reading also reduced from 30-40ug/L to <20ug/L.Visually, the lake showed consistent clarity.
