Technical Visit to Federal Territory Labuan by Director General of NAHRIM on 14 May 2013.

    A visit led by the Director General NAHRIM, Y. Brs. Ir. Hj. Ahmad Jamalluddin Bin Shaaban was held to Federal Territory Labuan on 14 May 2013. A one day visit covers locations listed below with different objectives as described:

     i. Jeti Menumbok, Sabah to have a firsthand look on the jetty operations and discussions with the operator on sedimentation and erosion problems at the surrounding areas;
     ii. Jabatan Pelabuhan dan Dermaga Sabah with the objective to get a closer understanding on the role and function of the departments in the planning and operation of Port and Harbour in the state of Sabah.

    This visit is one of a series of visits initiated by NAHRIM to promote the services and facilities of Hydraulic and Instrumentation Laboratory as well as expertise and research capabilities of Research Centres related to erosion and sedimentation at the estuarine and coastal areas, the effectiveness of designed water infrastructure and the operation of ports and harbours.

   The visit was also joined by Ir. Hj. Mohd Radzi Abd. Hamid, Director of Research Centre for Coastal Management (PKP), Ir. Dr. Nasehir Khan, Director of Research Centre for River Management(PKS), Ir. Hj. Mohd Fauzi Mohamad, Director of Hydraulic and Instrumentation Laboratory (MHI), Tn. Hj. Abdul Mubin Bin Harun, Director of Planning and Evaluation Division (BPP) and senior researchers from MHI, PKP and BPP.

   At the Jeti Menumbok briefing on the jetty operation was given by En. Mohd Rusli, Marine Department Officer and no issues on sedimentation and erosion encountered.

   Jabatan Pelabuhan dan Dermaga, Sabah was headed by Captain Chin Kui Foh, Director, En Raymond Murus, Division Head of Engineering, En. Raymod Murus, Division Head of Shipping and other officers. Presentation on historical background of the establishment, mission, vision, objective and roles of the department, organisation chart and recruitment of staff was given by the Director. A total of eight (8) ports and harbour in Sabah are under the department’s supervision and are located at Menumbok, Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Sandakan, Lahat Datu, Semporna, Tawau and Sipitang.

   A presentation was also given by NAHRIM, focusing on NAHRIM’s functions, administrative structure, including facilities and services available in MHI. NAHRIM’s research expertise in coastal and port studies and estuarine was also presented briefly by the Director of Research Centre for Coastal Management and Director of Research Centre for River Management.
