Reports on the Official Visit to Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) Headquarters and Sungai Kedah Tidal Barrage, Ampang Jajar, Alor Setar, Kedah. May 15, 2012.

      Hydraulic and Instrumentation Laboratory (MHI), NAHRIM has organized an official visit to Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) Headquarters and Sungai Kedah Tidal Barrage, Alor Setar, Kedah, on May 15, 2012. The visit was led by Ir. Hj. Mohd Fauzi Bin Mohamad, Director of MHI together with 8 MHI staff. The objective of the visit is to have a closer view on the tidal barrage structure, functions and the operational aspects.

      Tours begin with a visit to MADA headquarters, located adjacent to the tidal barrage structure. MHI group was greeted by Tn. Hj. Nasiruddin bin Abdullah, Director of Irrigation and Drainage and his senior officer, En. Yusnazarudin bin Md. Daud. Briefing on the function of MADA was delivered by Tn. Hj. Nasiruddin. MADA is responsible in managing the water resources of three major dams in Kedah that is Muda, Pedu and Ahning to agriculture area for Kedah and Perlis with a combined storage capacity of 1,508 cubic meter. MADA was also responsible to control the water level of Sungai Kedah Basin via Sungai Kedah Tidal Barrage for flood management.

      Sungai Kedah Tidal Barrage was constructed in the 60's with 400' (133m) wide across Sungai Kedah , it consists of seven gates of size 45' x 20' each one and a boat lock size 30' x 220' to provide boat access to the river mouth which is situated 10 km away. It was designed to accommodate maximum flow rates up to 480m3/s (100 ARI). The tidal barrage was officially opened by late YB Tan Sri Hj. Mohd Ghazali bin Hj. Jawi, the then Minister of Agriculture and Lands on 19 September 1971.

      MHI group was then taken to the Sungai Kedah Tidal Barrage control room where briefing on the operation and the control system was given by Mr. Mohd Zainol, Control Technicians. Good operational and maintenance practices since 41 years ago has made the Government of Malaysia's RM5 million investment worthwhile.
