Site Visit to Sessang and Sibu, Sarawak for the Study of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Water Management in Peatland. 10th and 11th July 2012.

on . Posted in Archives of Activities 2012

On the 10th and 11th July, 2012, NAHRIM officers had arranged a trip to Sibu and Sessang, Sarawak to observe the proposed field sites for the Study of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Water Management in peatland areas. A total of eight officers led by the Director of Research Centre for Geohydrology, Dr. Saim bin Suratman representing Director General of NAHRIM have participated in this site visit. The officers include those from Research Centre for River Management (PKS), Research Centre for Water Resources (PKSA), Research Centre for Geohydrology (PKG) and Research Centre for Water Quality and Environment (PKKAAS).

This site visit was held following the meeting between NAHRIM and Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) on the 18th May, 2012, in which the MPOB has agreed to collaborate with NAHRIM on research related to greenhouse gas emissions and water management in peatland areas. The main purpose of the site visit is to observe the suitability of the area of peatlands owned by MPOB in Sessang and study plot managed by MPOB but owned by Tradewinds Plantation Berhad near Sibu, to the impact of water management on GHG emission. This is to facilitate the collaboration between the MPOB and NAHRIM in the future. The MPOB team was led by Dr. Hanif bin Harun, Senior Research Officer of Agronomy Unit, from the MPOB headquarters.

The site visit commenced with a briefing session by MPOB research officers at the Sessang Research Station, Saratok in the morning of the 10th July 2012 followed by a visit to the MPOB's peatlands research lands in Sessang, which is located about 30 km from the MPOB office. During the visit, research officers of the MPOB Sessang branch, Mrs. Farawahida together with Dr. Hanif have explained in details on the site management, particularly on controlling the water in the peatland areas for oil palm plantations.

On the following day, 11th July 2012, the group visited Pelitanah oil palm plantation estate located near Sibu, which is owned by the Tradewinds Plantation Berhad. MPOB and Tradewinds are working together on research regarding the greenhouse gas emissions due to the opening up of peatlands for oil palm plantations. At this particular site, tools for data collection purposes are installed, which include equipments to measure rainfall, wind velocity, humidity, temperature, carbon and methane gas emissions. In addition, this area is also equipped with the infrastructures to control the quantity of water such as reservoirs/ponds, irrigation canals, weirs and water level gauges to optimally manage the water levels in the plantation. The Tradewinds Plantation Berhad, was led by the Sibu Regional Manager, Mr Lai Swee Yong.

NAHRIM would like to sincerely thank MPOB Headquarters, MPOB Saratok Branch and Tradewinds Plantation Berhad for their co-operation and the hospitality provided during the visit.
