A site visit delegation to Ahning Dam, Kedah from NAHRIM consisting of 6 participants was held on February 12, 2014. This site visit was led by Deputy Director General of NAHRIM, Dr. Saim Suratman. This visit was also accompanied by staffs from Kedah State Water Resources Board (LSANK) and Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA). The objective of this visit was to:

    a) to review the geological conditions of surrounding dam area
    b) to assess the concentration of iron and manganese in surface water samples
    c) to determine the source of iron and manganese in the water surface
This site visit is made following complaints made by the Syarikat Air Darul Aman (SADA) on the high concentration of iron and manganese from the raw water source originated from the Ahning Dam.

The delegation was informed by the MADA officer that the water quality deteriorated during dry season. The delegates were also informed that the previous water treatment plant does not have any problem in treating raw water and was able to meet the drinking water standards set by Ministry of Health (MOH). Nevertheless, the after the completion of the upgrading water treatment plant with larger capacity, they are facing problems in treating the same concentration of iron and manganese in the raw water source.

Ahning Dam was built in 1985 and was completed in 1989 by the Public Works Department. It has a water storage capacity of 275 million cubic meters and covered an area of 12 sq. km. The main purpose of the dam was to supply water for domestic and industrial uses. To better coordinate the Ahning dam releases to meet the irrigation and domestic demands with Muda and Pedu Dams, the operation and maintenance of these dam is handover to MADA in 1991.
